Overdentures are when implants (or mini-implants) are used to secure the denture to the jawbone. Overdentures differ from traditional dentures in that dentures typically require adhesives to secure the dentures to the gums.
Overdentures can come in a variety of different forms including mini-implants and implant supported dentures.
The main parts of overdentures are:
- Dental Implants – Multiple dental implants are embedded into your jawbone. This works to secure your denture and also helps to prevent bone loss.
- Dentures – Dentures will attach to the dental implants. In many cases, your existing dentures can be modified so that they can be secured to the implants.
Advantages of Overdentures
- Dentures are able to snap in and out for cleaning and maintenance
- No more dealing with pastes or adhesives for your dentures
- You can bite into an apple and eat a steak again
- No major surgery or long recovery
- A fraction of the cost of more invasive options (like traditional dental implants)
- A much more secure fit for your dentures – no slippage
The Overdenture Procedure
The type of overdentures that are right for you will be dependent on your complimentary implant consultation with our office. There are two general procedures that are described below. Your procedure may vary based on your specific needs.
Overdentures Mini Implant Procedure
The entire procedure is non-invasive and is completed in just one dental appointment. The procedure typically lasts just over an hour.
Procedure Summary:
- Mini Implant Posts are placed along your gum line
- Metal receptacles are embedded in the base of your current dentures
- O-rings in the receptacles lock onto posts, securing your dentures in place
- Your dentures will now be able to be easily and securely snapped in and out
Recovery time is much quicker than the recovery period associated with dental implants. Typically the soreness only lasts for a couple of days.
Overdentures With a Traditional Implant Procedure
Overdentures using traditional dental implants involves the embedding of an implant. The implant is anchored to the jaw bone, creating a very strong bond that actually helps to prevent further bone loss to the jaw.
Your dentures are then modified so that they can snap securely either directly on to the implants, or onto a bar that is connected to the implants.
